How People Are Trying Their Best To Solve The Problem Of Ocean Plastic Pollution?

Plastic pollution in the ocean is a major environmental problem that has been getting more and more attention in recent years. The effects of this plastic are visible to anyone who takes the time to look, but there are so many other issues to consider when discussing marine plastics.

If you've ever wondered what people are doing to try and solve this problem, then this article is for you!

What Is Marine Plastics?

2

First off, let's define what exactly "marine plastics" are. Marine plastics are defined as any type of man-made solid material that has ended up in the ocean, most frequently originating from land or ships.

This includes plastic bottles, plastic bags, buoys, strapping bands, and lots more. These plastics can either be microplastics, which can be as small as a grain of sand, or macroplastics, which are larger pieces of plastics.

It's estimated that 80% of the debris in our oceans is actually made up of microplastics! The majority of marine plastics come from countries on the coastline, although a large amount originates from inland sources (such as rivers).

Countries like China, Indonesia, and Thailand see a lot of waste from inland sources because river waters carry plastic debris downstream. Once the plastics hit the oceans, they can travel thousands of miles on ocean currents before eventually washing up onto the shore.

The Rise Of Marine Plastics

3

Plastic pollution has been a growing problem for decades, but it wasn't until recently that people became more aware of the issue. During World War II, plastics were only used sparingly, due to the need for metal in the war effort. As soon as the war was over, though, there was an explosion of plastic use.

This period saw the invention of shopping for plastic bags, water bottles, food containers, and lots more. The increase in plastics production meant an increase in plastic waste that entered the oceans.

It wasn't until 1991 that scientists first started to measure just how much was being dumped into our seas. Many countries have started to release reports on this issue, and all of them find that more plastics are entering the oceans every year.

The Effects Of Marine Plastics

Once plastics enter our oceans, they can have a huge impact on marine life. This is because fish and birds mistake the tiny plastic grains for food.

According to National Geographic, It's estimated that 90% of sea birds have ingested some form of plastic, which can eventually kill them. Ingesting plastics does not just cause death for sea birds though, it also affects the rest of their ecosystem.

As mentioned above, many sea birds eat these plastics mistaken for food. Once they have been digested, chemicals from the plastics get released into the bird's bloodstream and can spread throughout its body. These chemicals can harm the bird's reproductive system and digestive system, which can lead to death.

4

Some animals aren't just harmed by the plastics they eat though; many also die from becoming entangled in abandoned plastic fishing nets and other debris. This issue especially impacts sea turtles because their flippers get caught easily in these types of materials.

Abandoned plastic fishing nets, in particular, are harmful to many forms of sea life. They can be seen floating in the water for years, trapping and killing marine life when they get caught up in them. A lot of efforts have been made to rid our oceans of these abandoned nets so far, but they remain a huge problem due to their size.

There are many other ways that marine plastics can harm sea life, but these are some of the main issues today. If you want to discover more about how to fight ocean plastic pollution, make sure to keep reading this article!

The Consequences Of Marine Plastics

If we don't start addressing this problem soon, it could have a huge impact on our planet. This is because not only does marine plastic pollution affect the environment, it also has a negative effect on many industries.

Restaurants and retailers that sell bottled water, for example, would have to find an alternative if all their plastic bottles ended up in the sea, as they would no longer be able to use them.

The fishing industry would also be affected by this issue as they often find their nets and equipment clogged with plastics.

How Can I Help With Marine Plastic Pollution?

6

The best thing to do is what you've probably heard a million times: reduce, reuse, recycle!

Try to avoid single-use plastics and single-use plastic packaging as much as possible, and recycle your plastics whenever you can.

What Is Ocean Plastic Pollution?

It is the accumulation of plastic items on the world's oceans, seas, and coastlines. The debris is already harmful at sea, harming marine life through entanglement, suffocation, and ingestion. It also poses a threat to the tourism and fishing industries.

It seems that our earth has become one big dumping ground for waste plastic materials: every year, almost 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enter our oceans.

Where Does The Plastic Waste Come From?

It comes from many different sources: households, local government facilities, commercial businesses, and even small communities.

The large "garbage patches" in our oceans are mostly made up of tiny pieces of broken-down plastics that have been so widely used that they have become almost ubiquitous in our daily lives.

What Are Single-Use Plastics?

It is a term used to describe products that are used only once before being disposed of, meaning they cannot be recycled.

Some examples include single-use plastic bags, cutlery, and plates.

What Problems Might Single-Use Plastics Cause?

Single-use plastics are one of the most common types of waste found in our oceans. The majority of the waste found in our oceans is microplastics, which are often mistaken for food by marine life.

Solutions To The Problem Of Ocean Plastic Pollution

Our company Staroon has joined hands with the Ocean Cycle to combat this growing environmental issue. Together, we are promoting the 3R's - reduce, reuse, and recycle to promote sustainable living practices.

We are calling for all countries to sign on to the United Nations' Clean Seas campaign to reduce marine debris and microplastics, especially in oceans and seas.

We recognize that we live on a finite planet with limited resources, which we must respect and protect for future generations of all living things.

Let's solve this problem together!

How Are People Working To Solve The Problem Of Ocean Plastic Pollution?

The problem of ocean plastic pollution is growing every day, and we need to do something about it. According to Our World In Data, 80% of ocean plastic waste comes from the land, and 20% comes from the sea. Marine life gets in trouble because they can get entangled or eat plastic waste, which affects their growth.

This makes our planet uneasy when we consider recycling the marine waste environment, where a group of people has started tackling the problem by recycling the waste into something useful.

Several companies have also started taking steps towards solving this problem. One of those companies is the Ocean Cycle, which set up a goal to send 100% of ocean plastic waste back to land for recycling and make it useful again as a product. The company has created a line of products made out of recycled plastic. These products are also 100% recyclable.

One of the main reasons recycling is not done on a large scale is that it involves complicated procedures requiring an expert to do them. This means that only a few people know about reprocessing, and eventually, this expert knowledge is not passed on.

Therefore, oceancycle.co has developed a program called "ocean plastic experts" to empower the people who have the necessary knowledge and expertise in reprocessing so that they can work with them and solve this problem together by sending back the recycled plastic to land for recycling.

How Does Marine Plastic Waste Recycling Work?

There are a number of organizations that focus on recycling marine plastic waste. There are a few different methods to accomplish this goal, including one system that uses plastic waste particles in slurry form to make drainage pipes.

Another interesting project is working with the local fishing industry to remove nets from seabeds and recycle them.

10

What About Marine Plastic Pollution And The Environment?

Hundreds of thousands of animals die every year from ingesting and getting tangled up in marine plastics. This is a serious problem and one with far-reaching effects on the oceanic ecosystem and beyond.

The largest animals known to have died this way include sperm whales, beaked whales, and turtles. Even one case of an 18-foot long, 100,000-pound whale was found to have consumed over 1,000 pounds of plastic items.

How Can We Solve The Problem Of Plastic Pollution?

People worldwide are now recognizing that we have a huge plastic pollution problem and need to do something about it. As you probably know, oceans and seas around the world are swimming with plastic.

No matter how many times we try to clean up beaches and ocean coasts, unfortunately, more plastic is always coming along. We simply cannot remove all the plastic items. This is a huge problem because about 80% of it comes from land, so how do we deal with this issue if we can't remove all the plastic? The answer may seem very simple: let's stop putting plastic into the ocean.

The problem is that there are many ways in which people are trying to solve this problem.

Some people are trying to reduce the amount of plastic they use in their everyday lives so that less ends up in the ocean.

Others are recycling as much plastic as possible to avoid it ending up in the ocean.

Why Is There So Much Plastic In Our Seas?

One reason is that if you go to the grocery store, you can get plastic bags for free. And then when you're done with your groceries and go home, there is no reason not just to dump all that plastic into the bin instead of recycling it. When people don't have to pay for plastic bags, they take more.

And when they take more, there is more plastic in the ocean. Another reason why so much plastic ends up in the ocean is that it's often cheaper to buy new products than to recycle old ones.

Also, sometimes people don't know where or how to recycle, and so all their recyclables end up either in a landfill site or as litter.

What Are Some Ways You Can Try To Reduce The Amount Of Plastic In Our Oceans?

Some people have even started a social movement called Refuse the Straw, where they ask restaurants and bars not to give them straws with their drinks. It is a campaign to ban plastic straws. The reasoning behind this is that every day, millions of people drink from disposable plastic straws, and they end up littering our beaches.

11

If you do feel the need to use a straw when you drink something, consider using a reusable metal or glass one instead of a plastic one as it is more recyclable.

What Are Some Ways You Can Recycle Your Plastics?

In addition to putting plastic recycling bins in public places so that people can drop off their recyclables, some cities have introduced a deposit return scheme.

Under this system, consumers pay an extra deposit when they purchase a drink from a plastic bottle or tin can. When the consumer is done with the product and returns it to a recycling point, he will receive his deposit back.

Why Is Littering A Problem?

If you go to the beach and there's trash everywhere, it looks terrible, and we feel really bad about it. But how much does it actually affect us?

Many people think that litter doesn't do any harm, but in fact, if we litter we can cause injury or death to animals who live in the area.

12

For example, sea turtles eat jellyfish and plastic bags that resemble jellyfish when they are floating at the water's surface. This can result in injury or death for many of them every year.

Another example is that sometimes birds will ingest small pieces of plastic while looking for prey on land or at sea. When this happens, the plastic trash can clog up their digestive system and cause them to die.

How To Reduce Plastic And Other Ocean Pollution?

Ocean pollution is one of the major issues in the world. However, we can reduce it by doing some of the following things:

1. Reduce the usage of plastic bags and other types of plastics. Use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones, and avoid using disposable products such as plastic straws and plastic cutlery that will only pollute the ocean. To avoid plastic cutlery when you're eating out, Make sure to use a reusable spoon, knife, and fork.

2. If you can do so, choose to recycle some personal items such as toothbrushes and razors.

3. Avoid dropping wastes on streets and beaches. Eventually, it will reach the ocean.

4. Lead a healthy lifestyle by eating sustainable seafood and planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

5. Use non-toxic cleaning supplies and detergents for daily use in the home and workplace.

6. Avoid eating fish that are caught in oceans polluted with plastic.

7. Participate in beach cleanups to help reduce the amount of pollution reaching our beaches and the ocean.

8. Never throw or casually discard objects into waterways or beaches as it can degrade marine life.

9. Educate yourself on proper garbage disposal methods to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in the ocean.

10. Support environmental conservation and recycling programs by participating or donating if you can.

11. Plant more trees to reduce the amount of pollution on our planet and save the environment.

12. Participate or support organizations' movements against ocean pollution, such as Ocean Cycle.

The United Kingdom Will Impose A Tax On Plastic

An increasing number of countries have now imposed a ban on disposable plastics and single-use plastic bags or established concrete targets for reducing plastic consumption and waste.

The UK's new plastic packaging tax will come into effect on 1 April 2022. The PPT intends to encourage recycling and reduce use, which can harm our oceans and wildlife.

● Starting from April 2022, the tax will be implemented in order to reduce plastic pollution. The new law applies only if your package contains less than 30% recycled plastics when measured by weight.

● The tax will apply to businesses that manufacture or import plastic packaging components, which are used in the production process for goods that come under the UK's jurisdiction.

● PPT will not apply to plastic packaging that contains 30% or more recycled plastics, nor any other type of material.

● The tax on plastic will be charged at a rate of £200 per tonne. The sum is apportioned among companies where the packaging weighs less than one tonne.

● Businesses that produce less than 10 tonnes of plastic packaging in 12 months will be exempted from the charge.

Conclusion

The best way to help the campaign against ocean pollution is by buying products that are not made of plastic. You can also try reducing how much you use plastics in your day-to-day life, such as using reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones and avoiding disposable products like plastic straws or cutlery. If all else fails, buy a product with recycled content!
